Wonderland in Winter Park

The byline for the Today Show read, "Boy, age 8, experienced heaven."  Okay… so why didn't the Today Show call me?  Skiing at Winter Park affirmed the presence of heaven for me!  Our spring ski trip started with smooth sailing into Denver International Airport which boasts record-setting luggage retrieval time and a really cool separate carousel for snowboards and ski bags.  We made a quick hop into our rental car, pointed it uphill and up into the mountains we went.  Arriving on a weekday meant that we didn't have to struggle with traffic, a definite plus for shedding the shackles of work life.  On the road west of Denver be wary not to lose your precious "vacation mode" feeling by getting stressed out on the I-70 corridor.  If traffic clogs and hesitates because everyone decided to head to heaven; a good place to take a break, de-stress and get a great pizza is Beau Jo's in Idaho Springs (exit 240).  The restaurant has been featured on "Man vs. Food" and offers some quick and tasty bites.

wp_2011_001.jpgWonderland in Winter Park.  You could not have ordered more glorious conditions:  fresh snow with turquoise blue sunny skies and light winds. Incredibly easy to get to the mountain, Winter Park is located right off of highway 40 and there are several options for free parking along the complimentary shuttle route.  The Lone Tree and Blue Spruce lots are great for close access when you need to get to the main lodge area for tickets or rentals.  If you already have your lift ticket and equipment in hand, park at the Corona Siding or the Utah Junction lots.  Ample spots are available there and allow you to step on the hill, pick up the Challenger or Super Gauge lift, and then at the end of the day, slide on over to your car without having to ride a shuttle.

Winter Park Resort is comprised of several mountains, ridges, and bowls.  Mary Jane Mountain is named for a lady of ill repute who was financially savvy and used her earnings from the railroad workers to purchase the area that later became part of the resort.  MJ Mountain's slogan "No Pain, No Jane" comes from the numerous mogul runs located there.

wp_2011_004.jpgwp_2011_011.jpgFitted with K2's and the most comfortable Head ski boots I've ever worn we ascended the mountain pulsing with a palpable anticipation.  The message board at the top of Super Gauge Express read:  "Couldn't get much better than this!"  What an understatement! At the top of Mary Jane we decided to check out the fantastic fresh snow on a black diamond mogul run called "Trestle".  A black run is not generally my first choice because I've grown a bit more cautious over the years, but this ended up being Tim's favorite run. New snow and shoulder high moguls surrounded on both sides by gorgeous pines were dusted in white.  The brilliant Colorado sun warmed our faces and gave us grins the entire (really long thigh burner) way down.  Spontaneous whoops of joy were heard from everywhere; we just couldn't help but squeal with delight.  It really was that good.  Our new snow term for the week was "marshmallow pie".   An especially apt description of what the snow felt like on Little Ten, another black diamond run.  I know, I said these weren't my favorite but with snow that felt like we were skiing on top of a cloud, I just couldn't help myself from going back several times.  Anyway, "No Pain, No Jane" right?

wp_2011_012.jpgA visit to Winter Park just wouldn't be complete without a ride up the Panoramic Express lift to the peak elevation 12,060 feet on Parsenn Bowl.  The vista is breathtaking, even if you're acclimated to the altitude!.  Intermediate skiers will feel welcome with numerous blue runs to choose from.  Village Way in Vasquez Cirque is routinely groomed if you don't want to ride the face.  Duck into the trees at the face bottom for some laugh out loud fun runs.  Memories of amusement park roller coaster rides will be triggered as you wind your way down through the forest.  Juniper and Paintbrush give ample room for turns and a bit of elbow room while Kinnikinnic and Willett's Way are tighter and require a few crisp turns.  Stay alert in the woods!  It's a great place to work your sylvan ski magic and clear your mind.

wp_2011_0051.jpgWinter Park fans the fantasy fire with the whimsically named runs Jabberwocky and Cheshire Cat. You just might believe that you'll see young Alice peeking out from around a snow dusted pine.  Skiing can only be this great in fantasyland.  Be sure to step off Lonesome Whistle on the right about halfway down the run to skittle down Dilly Dally Alley.  Dilly Dally Alley is a narrow lane with tickle-your-tummy bumps and twirls around trees, it's an absolute gas!  All take you down to the Olympia Express lift to zip up to the top of Winter Park Mountain with an elevation of 10,700 feet.  You can stop in at the Sunspot Lodge for a quick bite or break or keep on trucking down Winter Park Mountain.  You can get to Mary Jane from this point, but it's a fairly treacherous mogul run called "Outhouse".  While not for the weak of heart, it is the quickest way to Mary Jane, but only for advanced skiers.  I chose the longer Whistlestop to High Lonesome Express, a couple extra minutes but worth keeping my limbs intact.  Of course, Tim and young Zach had to take the short cut (but they only ran it once!)wp_2011_002.jpg

New this year at Winter Park is the Private Lesson Center.  A stylish new building with mountain flair, it is complete with complimentary lockers, full concierge service, and private access to all lifts.  The center is conveniently located at the bottom of the Zephyr lift and boasts a performance lab with custom alignment and free Wi-Fi access.  Guests can relax after lessons on comfy leather couches while watching flat screen televisions and getting their boots dried with the automatic dryers.  You'll be back for more lessons with this pampering.

wp_2011_025.jpgOur week ended with a celebratory dinner at the Brickhouse 40 restaurant located right on Main Street in Grandby; definitely worth a stop.  When you walk through the door, you know you're in store for a treat.  A large fireplace with comfy leather furniture greets you and entices you to relax and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail.  The restaurant is located in a former home furnishings store and some of the displays are still present, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.  The menu selections are of Greek/Mediterranean focus and reasonably priced with generous portions.  I was glad that downhill skiing burns 300-400 calories per hour because there were no leftovers!  I need to ask my editor if I can do this full-time or perhaps get a leg in on the grasshopper counting!  Happy skiing.

(Editor's Note:  Maggie, Don't give up your day job, but keep skiing, writing, and having fun.)

Global Warming Impact On Glaciers, Surrounding Populations, And The Ski Industry

Author: onlySkiing.com

Global warming is melting glaciers at an alarming rate, undoubtedly changing the world, impacting local populations, and pushing the ski industry downhill.

There are varying opinions about whether melting glaciers are the result of global warming by man-made greenhouse gases or just a natural cycle of the earth, but the fact remains—glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, and the world is undoubtedly changing as a result.

Healthy glaciers add surface mass from precipitation and lose mass underneath from melting, maintaining roughly the same size from year to year.

The World Bank continues to release an endless stream of reports by global institutions and universities chronicling the melting of the world's cryosphere, or ice zone. One report references the glaciers in the Andes and revealed that Bolivia's famed Chacaltaya glacier has lost 80 percent of its surface area since 1982, and Peruvian glaciers have lost more than one-fifth of their mass in the past 35 years, reducing by 12 percent the water flow to the country's coastal region, home to 60 percent of Peru's population.

And if warming trends continue, the study concluded, many of the Andes' tropical glaciers will disappear within 20 years, not only threatening the water supplies of 77 million people in the region, but also reducing hydropower production, which accounts for roughly half of the electricity generated in Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador.

The Chacaltaya Glacier, thought to be 18,000 years old and once home to the highest ski resort in the world and now reduced to a rocky mountainside, bears powerful witness to the precipitous melting of glaciers.
GlobalWarmingBlogImage-Chacaltaya_Glacier.jpg
The rusting remains of the former Chacaltaya ski area now dominate what was once the highest ski-run in the world perched on the Chacaltaya glacier at some 17,390 feet (5,300 meters) high. Only a snowy ice cap of some 538 square feet (50 square meters) remains of the magnificent Chacaltaya glacier which spread over 17,222 square feet (1,600 square meters) in the 1950s.

This photo (top) shows The Chacaltaya Ski Area in 1973 and in 2009 (bottom).

GlobalWarmingBlogImage-Chacaltaya_SkiArea.jpg

Emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide trap heat in the atmosphere, warming the surface. One of the first impacts of glacier melting is likely to be in South America where shrinking glaciers can cause water supplies and put populations and food supplies at risk. The Andean glaciers are melting so fast that some are expected to disappear within 15-25 years, impacting Colombia, Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina, and Bolivia.

Around the world glaciers are retreating , and a number of other them, such as the, Himalayan Gangotri glacier, Athabasca, glacier in the Canadian Rockies, and Davos in the Swiss Alps are melting quickly.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned in 2007 that they could disappear by 2035, causing famine, water wars and hundreds of millions of climate change refugees.

The Innsbruck-based Austrian Alpine Association, says 85 of the 93 glaciers it monitored between the fall of 2008 and the fall of 2009 had receded, while seven stayed the same and one grew.

GlobalWarmingBlogImage-GlacierThinningMap.jpg
Ski Industry
According to Protect Our Winters (the snow industry climate change group founded by pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones), 47 Alpine resorts didn't even open in 2007 due to climate change, with average temperatures dramatically up.

The ski industry, recognizing that climate change is a major threat, set up the Sustainable Slopes project in 2002, through the National Ski Areas Association. More recently the Keep Winter Cool campaign was launched and many resorts have installed renewable energy projects.

But, various scientific reports suggest that the continued elevation of CO2 emissions will produce warmer winters, reduced snow pack and, in many areas, less water, which makes it harder for resorts to make snow, resulting in the future closing of many of today's ski areas.

Speeding Skiers Face Jail Time

Author: Roger Munns

Reckless skiing is a real problem in some areas. Those disobeying the speed limit signs in Utah may face jail time and fines.

The speed limit was put in place in certain areas where less experienced skiers are trying to learn the sport. Reckless behaviors of others have caused 10 percent of all collisions in Park City and Deer Valley. A report in the Salt Lake City Tribune states that reckless skiing is now considered a Class B Misdemeanor.

Ski patrollers will be monitoring the slopes in search of people disobeying the speed limits or skiing recklessly. The ski patroller can now call the police, and the offenders may find themselves in court. If a reckless skier is called to court, the patroller will be called in as a witness to the incident. If skiers are found guilty of reckless skiing, they will be fined 1,000 USD and face a six-month jail sentence.

Some ski resorts in Europe are also adopting the ski speed limit, including Switzerland's Grindelwald and Verbier. Pierre-Yves Deleze with the Verbier Tourist Office said, 'The idea is to allow beginners to learn without people skiing by them too fast and frightening them.'

The problem isn't simply fast skiers. Other reckless behaviour also endangers other skiers on the slopes.

'We did it because that's what people wanted', said Susanne Daxelhoffer at the Grindelwald area tourist office. 'The project is based on complaints of people skiing too fast and therefore fulfills a need', Daxelhoffer added.

Swiss ski resort Grindelwald was the first European resort to introduce a speed limit on one of its slopes. A growing number of high-speed collisions on crowded slopes helped fuel the decision to implement the 30kmph speed limit. France reported several deaths in the 2006-2007 ski season due to high-speed collisions.

Resort owners hope to combat deaths and injuries by decreasing speeds on crowded and beginner slopes.

Richard Slater, a British skier and father of three told reporters, 'It's particularly good if you have young children and want them to be able to ski without being hit by out of control skiers going too fast.'

According to BBC News, a study of 24 resorts reveals that all are keeping an eye on the experimental speed limit enforcements.

Speed limits for skiers and snowboarders might soon become commonplace on slopes around the world. The resorts of Park City and Deer Valley, both in Utah, are the first to implement a fine and jail time. Grindelwald and other European resorts that are adopting the ski speed limit do not plan to fine offenders. There they are simply warned to slow down.

When the proper amount of care and respect are given, skiing in general is a relatively safe sport. Some members of staff and skiers at the affected resorts are torn. They can see the importance of safer skiing, but some feel the punishment far exceeds the crime.

Some skiers see the new law as a way for authorities to control what they do in their leisure time. These skiers feel the law imposes unfair restrictions on a fast-paced, thrilling sport.

Skiers on the other side of the fence believe the law will stop some skiers from recklessly skiing and putting others in harm's way. This law gives less experienced skiers hope that they can safely enjoy their time on the slopes.

A Swiss insurance group is installing timers on certain slopes. These timers allow people to see their speeds and should encourage them to ski within set limits. Ski resorts world-wide hope the implementation of timers and patrollers will help make the slopes safer for more inexperienced skiers.
